Welcome to our new column. Every Friday you will find mini-interviews with people who are currently on the waitlist to try Spiff. Get ready to discuss happiness, habits, life-goals and money. This week? Norwegian photographer and (highly accomplished) student, Nathalie Lystad.
Full name: Nathalie Lystad
From and current city: Oslo, Norway. Just came back from an exchange in Tokyo, Japan.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in International Relations. Currently taking a Master's Degree in Political Science, as well as studying to become a clinical psychologist.
Occupation: Working part-time as a photographer.
How would you describe your life today?
Life as a student is relatively busy. Especially after I decided to take two degrees simultaneously! There is always a paper due, plus (what feels like) hundreds of pages to read before the next class. But, I can't complain. Life as a student is also quite flexible. I have been lucky to spend two exchange semesters abroad, one in Hong Kong, the other one in Tokyo. I think everyone who has the opportunity, should go abroad (at least for a few months) to experience a different culture, and learn about people from other parts of the world!
What do you love the most about your life?
I love that I (mostly) have the freedom to schedule my own days. Both when it comes to studies and work.
How did you get into photography?
I have always had an eye for visuals, and I have always loved to creating things. I started to experiment with photography when I was around 17 years old. I bought my first decent camera when I was around 20 years old. What I love the most about photography, is that you can ALWAYS improve. Plus, you don't actually need a fancy camera to take a good picture! It might sound like a cliche, but in the end it all comes down to capturing moments, a feeling or a certain vibe.
We understand you are quite the student! Can you tell us a little bit about this journey so far?
I have been a student for what feels like forever. It took me some time to figure out what I wanted to focus on. I have always been interested in this fascinating world we life in, so to study International Relations was an easy choice. However, at some point I felt as if it was all a little bit "too macro" for me. I then navigated myself into psychology instead. The human brain is quite fascinating as well!
How would you describe your relationship with money?
Ive never been good with numbers, but I'm quite good with money. I never spend money I don't have. I also put some money aside every month towards my savings account.
How could Spiff improve your life?
I recently heard about a group of friends who go on vacation together every year. They created a joint saving-plan to finance their annual vacation. Plane-tickets, accommodation, food and drinks; everything is covered by their monthly savings; through the joint saving-plan. What a brilliant idea! I heard Spiff has a social feature, and I hope it is going to make saving up together fun! Can't wait to try.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I have hopefully finished my studies. I also hope to have the same freedom I have now. Other than that, I have no idea. I am purposely not a long-term planner; except from when it comes to my personal economy of course 😉
